Unclaimed lost or found items
Found items with a value under €450 are kept up to 3 months. This can be in your home or in the Town Hall. What happens if the owner does not claim the item within 3 months? The finder becomes the owner of the item.
Found items with a value above €450 are kept up to 1 year. After that, the finder becomes the owner of the item. Do you not want the item? You can leave it with us. We will then automatically become the new owner and we will decide what will be done with it.
Lost or found pets
You cannot report lost or found pets to us. You should report lost or found pets to the Amivedi Foundation. This a national voluntary organisation for the registration of lost and found pets in the Netherlands.
Dutch Civil Code
The rules governing lost and found items are stated in the Dutch Civil Code. Certain rules apply when you find an item and also when you lose an item. The Civil Code also stipulates that the municipality has ‘a duty of care for unattended objects.’ In other words, we are responsible for the registration and management of lost property. The rules are laid down in the Dutch Civil Code, volume 5, articles 5-12.
