Changing your name

General

You can choose to use your partner's surname after getting married or entering into a registered partnership. This applies to both partners. You should request your name change in the municipality where you live. The municipality will inform government agencies of how you wish to be addressed in the future. This is known as ‘the name you use.’

Good to know

  • Everyone who is married or has a registered partner may use the surname of his or her registered partner or spouse. After divorce or dissolution of the partnership, you may still use the surname of your ex-partner. This does not change automatically.
  • Your own surname (maiden name) does not change. Your own surname is always stated on official documents such as a passport or driving licence. This may be supplemented by the surname of your partner.
  • After your wedding or registered partnership ceremony, you can inform us how you wish to be addressed by government agencies such as the Tax and Customs Administration and the Social Insurance Bank (SVB).
  • You should do this in the municipality where you live. This may be a municipality other than where you were married.
  • You must inform your bank and your insurance company of your change of name yourself.
  • The name you use is recorded at the moment that your marriage or partnership is registered in the Key Register of Persons. - If you wish to change your name because you are getting divorced, the name will be changed as soon as we receive your digital or written request.
